The members of the FreeChurch have a place of worship, and there is a smallepiscopal chapel. The parochial school affords instruc-tion in Latin and mathematics, with all the elementarybranches ; the master has a salary of £34, a house andgarden, a portion of the Dick bequest, and £20 is a savings bank ; and the poor not on the roilenjoy the benefit of a charitable bequest of £20 per an-num. The antiquities comprise the remains of severalDruidical temples ; vestiges of a Roman redoubt, as issupposed ; and the ruins of the ancient castle of Fren-draught, at the conflagration of the tower of which, in1630, Viscount Aboyne, eldest son of the Marquess of461. Burgh Seal. Huntly, and four others, perished. The AdmirableCrichton, who flourished about the middle of the six-teenth century, is said to have been born at Frendraught,the principal seat of the family, and from which they de-rived the title of Viscount. FORRES, a royal burghand a parish, in the countyof Elgin, 12 njiles (W. by S.)from Elgin ; containing 3711inhabitants, of whom 2844are in the burgh. This place,the name of which, in theGaelic language, is descrip-tive of its situation on theriver and bay of Findhorn,has by some historians beenidentified with the Jaris ofPtolemy, and is celebratedfor its ancient castle, in which Duffus, King of Scotland,was treacherously murdered by the governor, in 966
