Hurricane Fran. Coloured satellite image of hurricane Fran approaching the north American mainland from the Caribbean Sea on 4 September 1996. The hurricane is the swirl of white clouds surrounding the yellow \eye\". The \"eye\" is comprised of relatively calm, cloud-free air at a very low pressure. Around this \"eye\" are strong winds and heavy rain. Hurricane Fran came ashore at Cape Fear in North Carolina (at top centre), USA, on 5 September 1996. It had winds reaching 190 kilometres per hour, delivered 36 centimetres of rain and killed 34 people. Image taken by a NOAA satellite."
