Samurai Train for Rebellion


Saigo Takamori (1828-1877) has sometimes been called the last true Samurai. One of the Satsuma leaders in the new Meiji government, he became dissatisfied with the Meiji and resigned his position. Soon after, he opened a training school, both in academics and in military matters, for others dissatisfied with the new government. Here ,young samurai train in warfare at the school. In 1877, Saigo led a rebellion, the Satsuma Rebellion, against the government. He died in the effort. This illustration dates to 1901.
