Place a float upon the surface of the water in the cistern ; laya piece of phosphorus upon it,and having ignited, place anempty jar over it as in (Fig. 10.)As the phosphorus burns, whitefumes will fill the jar, and thewater will rise and occupy onefifth o-f the space, at first occu-pied by air. The white fumeswill disappear in a short time, and leave a colorless gascalled Nitrogen. It is devoid of taste or smell, andsparingly soluble in water—about the same as hydrogenin this respect. Nitrogen is lighter than air in the ratio of 97i to lighted candle immersed in this gas is immediatelyextinguished. Animals die in it, not from any poison-ous quality of the gas, but on account of the absence ofoxygen. From its incapability of supporting life, it iscalled azote, A moistened mixture of iron filings andsulphur may be substituted for the phosphorus in theprocess given, but a considerable length of time is re-quired in this case, for effecting the required
