Snake skeleton. Snakes are thought to have evolved from burrowing lizards, developing a long, sinuous body without legs. The skull is at right, attached to the top of a long spine. This can have between 130 and 500 vertebrae, depending on the species. Most of the vertebrae have moveable ribs, one sticking out on either side. Despite being moveable, the ribs do not actually play any part in locomotion. Snakes use various sets of muscles to pull and push themselves along the ground. Snakes are unique in that they have no sternum (breast bone). The final vertebrae have no ribs and form the snake's tail.
