On the inner surface of the basisphenoid portion there is a deep depression, the sella turcica or "Turk's Saddle," which is a conspicuous landmark on the inside of the mammalian skull and in which is cradled the downward- projecting hypophysis of the brain. Just anterior to the sella turcica there is a trans- verse groove in which lies the optic chiasma where fibers of the optic nerves cross from one side to the other. Enclosed within the body of the sphenoid is a pair of sphenoidal air sinuses (Fig. 500), separated from one another by a bony septum.
