Every event in History arose from some precedingtransaction, and became, in its turn, the parent ofothers, either more or less important; hence, how-ever trifling in themselves, or, if viewed without re-lation to other circumstances, however immaterialthe precise time of their occurrence may be, thereare few that had not some influence on the state ofthe nation in which they took place, and not unfre-quently also, on the affairs of neighbouring mere knowledge that any circumstance did hap-pen, is of little use for the legitimate purposes ofHistory, the utility of which depends on tracingevents to their causes ; anchronologyofhist00nico
