Gamma camera scan. Male patient undergoing a gamma camera scan (radionuclide scan or scintigraphy) of his heart. The gamma camera is at upper centre. Gamma scanning is a diagnostic technique which detects radiation emitted by a radioactive substance passed into the body. Here, the radioactive substance being passed through the heart emits gamma rays which are detected by the gamma camera. Images from the camera enable any functional changes of the heart to be detected before more serious structural changes occur.
