The River South Esk Glen Clova and Glen Doll Angus

Glen Clova is a glen of spectacular scenery with the landscape becoming more dramatic as you travel up the glen towards Glen Doll. It is the glen for wildlife, with a National Nature Reserve that attracts wildlife enthusiasts from all over the UK. Glen Clova is a glen for all seasons! From summer picnics and strolls by the river or in the forest, or the more challenging hill walking in spring and autumn, to the ultimate conditions of winter attracting the ice climbers, Glen Clova has something to offer everyone. Roaming in Glen Clova A track to the right of the Clova hotel leads to a small gate opening to an obvious path above a small pine wood which climbs steadily towards the hidden scoop of Loch Brandy. When the path divides go left, climbing gradually to the blunt snout of The Snub, a craggy edged spur. For the less energetic, the alternative branch takes an easier line to gentler slopes to the east of Loch Brandy on its climb to the summit of Green Hill. If you're determined to sample the delights of higher ground, start a thrust up The Snub where, from the edge of the broken escarpment, there's a birds eye view into the watery hollow of the loch. Views become more extensive with Mount Keen to the north and the Mounth's broad sweep of heather grass appears much as it would have done to those who crossed it carrying illicit whisky and driving cattle. There are two cairns on Green Hill, one at the summit and one marking the head of the path down towards Loch Brandy and the glen. If you¿re heading for Ben Tirran, avoid a large expanse of peat hag by following a green track to the south east. At it's junction turn SSE towards the edge above Loch Wharral then easterly across a small stream depression to grassier ground and the diminutive stony loch which lies at the foot of the final pull to the highest point. Known locally as The Goet (old scots gote meaning a ditch), its triangulation pillar crouches within a sheltering wall and is not seen until almost upon it. A
