T^nfortunately, Iioaa- ever, I came to grief, losing my whole apiary through an outbreak of foul brood. This gaA^e me experience. For the space of six j^ears my interest, Avhile never abating, Avas not gratified until, in 1896, I reneAved my acquaintance Avith bees by taking a stray colony from a hollow elm tree, with about 121b. of honey. The honey was converted into money, and then into syrup, foundation and a modest array of ajjpliances. A hive in Avhich to house the SAvarm I constructed from grocers' boxes and similarly fotir other hives Avere made the next season, and \Aere stocked in the autumn Avith driven bees. In the spring of 1898 I had five strong- colonies. By this method my aiiiary has paid its way in advance. Three of my hives have obtained prizes in shows. In. A.
