Fireflies and Milky Way. Time-exposure image of tracks of light (yellow) created fireflies seen against the Milky Way in the night sky over a wetland area. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Fireflies are nocturnal beetles that exhibit bioluminescence, the ability of an organism to emit visible light. The flashing lights enable fireflies to signal their presence to one another, which is of special importance during the mating season. Photographed in July, at Fujian Tulou, China.
