Georgius Agricola. Engraving of the German mineralogist Georgius Agricola (1494-1555), also known as Georg Bauer at work. He lived as a physician in some of the small mining towns of Saxony. His book, De re metallica (On the Subject of Metals), published in 1556, was clearly written & heavily illustrated, and summarised all the practical knowledge acquired by the Saxon miners of the day. It is regarded as the first text on mineralogy & Agricola as the father of mineralogy. He also wrote a book called De natura fossilium (The Nature of Fossils, published 1546), which classified minerals in perhaps the first comprehensive system.
