Portrait from Palace of Culture and Science Observation Deck to piano keyboard pedestrian crossing, ulica Emilii Plater, Warsaw

The Palace of Culture and Science (Palac Kultury i Nauki, abbreviated PKiN), including a 43 m high spire, is the tallest building in Poland and, at 231 m (758 ft), the eighth tallest building in the EU. Built 1952-1955, it was conceived as 'gift from the Soviet people to the Polish nation'. It is a mix of Stalinist architecture, Polish architectural elements and inspirations from American art deco skyscrapers. The Observation Terrace on the 30th floor, at a height of 114 m, gives excellent panoramic views of the city, here looking west towards a pedestrian crossing in the form of a piano keyboard across ulica Emilii Plater, between the Palace of Culture and Science, and Artis Galeria at 47 Emilii Plater. The crossing, one of two across Emilii Plater, pays tribute to Chopin Year 2010, the bicentenary of the composer's birth.
