Arrest of General Berton. 1879 illustration depicting the arrest of the French General Berton. Berton was thought to be a member of the Charbonnerie, the French arm of the Italian Carbonari. An informal network of Italian secret societies active in Italy from around 1800 to 1831, the Carbonari were a focus for those unhappy with the repressive political situation in Italy following 1815 and they further influenced other revolutionary groups in France, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Brazil and Uruguay. Caron was executed for conspiracy in 1822.
