In the centre of the structure and un-der the lantern the word Canada ap-pears in large letters, and immediatelyover the arched opening are inscribed thewords, The Future Granary of theEmpire. An illumination scheme has been de-signed whereby the main features of thestructure, as well as the mottoes, willstand out in bold and effective mannerafter dark. The design is by Messrs. Walker &Ramsay, of Glasgow, the architects forthe Wolverhampton Exhibition. 14 CANADIAN HARDWARE AND METAL. HALIFAX MERCHANTS DISCUSSHOLIDAYS. THE Retail Merchants Association ofHalifax does not like the idea ofhaving so many holidays. At ameeting of that organization, held on theevening of June 5, the consideration of themany public holidays coming together wasthe main business of the evening. A com-munication from the Halifax Board of Tradewas received, asking the Association to sendmembers to form part of a delegation towait on the Governor and Mayor regardingthe number of proposed holidays coming soclose together. A. W. Reddan was theoccupant of the chair, and W. E. Hebb wassecretary. A resolution was unanimously adoptedsetting forth that Thursday, June 26, andthe afternoon of Friday, June 27, berecognized as public holidays, providinga programme of sports be provided, andthat June 21 and July 1 be not observedthis year.
