They only occur inthe local products of the disease, but not in the blood or internalorgans ; hence we must assume that the general phenomena indiphtheria are partly dependent on the absorption of a poison,probably a toxalbumin, produced by the bacilli, partly to be ascribedto a secondary infection with the Streptococcus or cocci mentioned, and particularly the Streptococcus pyogenes (, c) are certainly found with extraordinary frequency not only in.
