Black Sheep (Ovis aries). Domesticated variety. Wool is being shed or moulted naturally, rather than being shorn by the shepherd. Rarely, so-called black individuals may be bred amongst any breed of sheep. The fleece appears dark due to the melanin content of the wool or hair. In the past the description,'black sheep of the family', came about as a derogatory or castogatory term for human individuals within a family who did not conform to that which might not be considered normal behaviour.
