Liquid water structure. Materials simulation showing how water molecules are arranged in its liquid form around a central reference molecule (H2O; red

Liquid water structure. Materials simulation showing how water molecules are arranged in its liquid form around a central reference molecule (H2O; red sphere of oxygen, and white spheres of hydrogen). Surrounding the central reference molecule are 'shells' showing the highly directional organization of water density arising from the hydrogen bonds. Shown in white are the first and second structural shells. The orange areas shows the depletion regions where no water molecules are present. This simulation was carried out using the quantum Drude oscillator model. This research, carried out by IBM, was published in 2018 with applications in simulations of new liquids and materials.
