Fjallsarlon Glacial Lagoon, South East Iceland

Vatnajokull glacier lagoon, South East Iceland is a visual wonder. This image was taken in January when there are only 4 hours of daylight. Glaciers are made up of extraordinary blue hued ice, which is due to the ice being compressed over centuries. Black stripes within the glaciers indicate layers of ash from volcanic eruptions over the ages. The action of the glaciers advancing and receding, is very powerful, eroding the terrain into valleys. The loose rubble left is called scree. Photography tourism in Iceland is big business. Photographic guides are well trained and monitored and are often photographers in their own right.
