A traditional house sign featuring a red lion grasping a golden goblet adorns the Baroque facade of At the Red Lion at Nerudova 41/236 in Malá Strana, the historic Little Quarter or Lesser Town of Prague, capital of Czechia / Czech Republic. The house, mainly 16th century but with a medieval Gothic cellar, was the birthplace and home of leading Czech-German Late Baroque altarpiece painter Petr Brandl (1668-1735). His dramatic works survive in Bohemian churches and monasteries and are also displayed in the National Gallery Prague.

Prague, Czechia / Czech Republic: a red lion standing within a Baroque cartouche while grasping a golden goblet in its right paw adorns the facade of At the Red Lion (U Cerveného Lva) at Nerudova 41/236 in Malá Strana, the historic Little Quarter or Lesser Town. The building, most recently a hotel, is a mainly 16th century Renaissance burgher house, partly reconstructed in the 1720s, which retains a well preserved vaulted 14th century Gothic limestone cellar and painted beamed ceilings in the Renaissance-era rooms above. It was the birthplace and home of the leading Czech-German Late Baroque altarpiece painter Petr Brandl (1668-1735), whose dramatic works survive in many Bohemian churches and monasteries and are also displayed in the National Gallery Prague. The red lion, sculpted in relief in 1608, is among at least 300 examples of traditional house signs or name plaques still displayed on Prague’s historic properties.
