Red Arrows in Enid formation banking

Red Arrow in Enid five formation banking left from head on trailing red white and blue vapour trails at the Farnborough International Airshow 2006 The vapour trails are formed by injecting diesel into the exhaust flow . The Red Arrows operate 12 BAe Hawk 1 or 1a advanced trainer aircraft nine being used for each air display with one held in reserve when away from base . They are currently based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire with supervision and support at Cranfield . They are acknowledged as one of the best air display teams in the world and have represented the RAF and British Industry at public displays in many countries . The aircraft they fly are made from mostly British components and foreign trips are funded by British Industry . The Red Arrows have always flown whichever aircraft is in service as the RAF advanced fast jet trainer currently the BAE SYSTEMS Hawk T Mk 1 . From 1965 until 1979 the Red Arrows flew the Hawk s predecessor the Folland Gnat . Before the war almost every squadron of the RAF had its own aerobatics team . The idea of utilising front line operational aircraft for formation aerobatic display teams was dropped in the early 1960s on the grounds of cost as a team like this now costs over 15 million per year to run . However as they are working operational aircraft the main display cost is fuel . The aircraft team pull about 5g force in group displays rising to the 8g aircraft limit on occasions with the synchro pair . The pilots are all serving Royal Air Force RAF officer volunteers who have all served on operational duties in fast jets . The Red Arrows badge of diamond nine formation bears the motto Eclat meaning excellence .
