Pterosaur (Pterodactylus kochi) walking, artwork. Pterosaurs, also known as pterodactyls, are an extinct group of flying reptiles that were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight. P. kochi was a small pterosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic (155 million years ago). It had a wingspan of between 50 - 100 centimetres, a long neck and a long pointed beak containing many small teeth. In 1784, a Pterodactylus fossil unearthed by Cosimo Collini was the first pterosaur ever discovered. Fossil trackways reveal that pterosaurs were able to walk on the ground by using all four limbs.
