A 1903 portrait of 'Fighting Mac' (Major-General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald, KCB, DSO , 1853-1903), a distinguished Victorian soldier who despite being acclaimed for his service in Afghanistan, Omdurman , Sudan, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) & the Boer War; and being appointed an aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria, he committed suicide in Paris returning from Ceylon after being accused of homosexual activities and facing a court-martial . The son of a Scottish croftcrofter. He left school aged 14 and at 17 enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders at Fort George, as an ordinary private soldier.
