Excessive female facial hair growth. Close-up of excessive hair growth on the face of a 25-year-old female patient. This condition, known as hirsutism, may be a sign of a more serious medical condition, especially if it develops well after puberty. It may be caused by an increase in androgen (male hormone) levels, or an oversensitivity of the hair follicles to androgens. Initial treatment is usually through hair removal methods but the underlying cause should also be investigated and may be treated with drugs designed to counter the effects of androgens or reduce their level in the body.
