Cocoon. Yellow silk silkworm (Bombyx mori) cocoon amongst twigs. This cocoon has been spun by a silkworm (caterpillar) to protect itself as it pupates during metamorphosis into a silk moth. The silk of the cocoon is harvested for use in clothing and fabrics. Once the cocoon has been produced, the pupa is killed to ensure the silk is not damaged by the emerging moth.
