Russian media and human rights groups have been reporting that homosexuals in the Russian region are being “rounded up” and taken to “concentration camps” where they are being beaten and tortured. Newspaper Novaya Gazeta claimed groups of gay men in the Russian region have been detained “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such”. Officials have denied the accusations. “You cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic,” spokesman Alvi Karimov told Interfax news agency.
