View SW of Dolbadarn Castle, Llanberis, Wales, UK, with the foothills of Snowdon, Cwm Dwythwch & the ridge running from Moel Eilio to Foel Gron (centre) & Foel Goch (L) visible to rear. The massive round tower was built by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth ('the Great) in the late 1220s. The castle stands on a spur between Llyn Peris & Llyn Padarn guarding the main routeway up to the Llanberis Pass. The tower is entered at first floor level; it has two storeys, a basement & an external latrine chute. A curtain wall surrounds the top of the rock platform which contains remains of a hall, two towers & another large building. Llywelyn ap Gruffydd imprisoned his brother Owain Goch in the tower from 1255-77. Edward I captured the castle in January 1283. JMW Turner's famous painting of the castle was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1800. The photograph was taken from the Zig-Zag Path in the Vivian Slate Quarry.
