They do not,however, treat their captives badly, but feedthem well, and seem to consider thempartly in the light of domestic servants, andpartly as available capital, or as a means ofexchange when any of their own friendsare taken prisoners by hostile tribes. The government of the Dory tribes isnominally a delegated chieftainship, but inreality a sort of oligarchy. There is a cer-tain dignitary, called the Sultan of Tidore,under whose sway this part of the countryis supposed to be, and from him the chief ofthe Dory tribes receives his rank. Whenthe chief dies, one of his relatives goes toconvey the news to the Sultan, taking withhim a present of slaves and birds of para-dise as tokens of allegiance. This man isalmost always appointed to the vacant place,and is bound to pay a certain tribute ofslaves, provisions, and war canoes, the latterbeing employed in collecting the Sultanstaxes.
