A late 19th century aerial view of Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorganshire, South Wales. Close to reserves of iron ore, coal, limestone, timber and water, it was an ideal site for ironworks and in the wake of the Industrial Revolution the demand for iron led to the rapid expansion of Merthyr's iron operations housing four of the greatest ironworks in the world: Dowlais Ironworks, Plymouth Ironworks, Cyfarthfa Ironworks and Penydarren.
