The complex three dimensional effect of this geometric mosaic produces the optical illusion of an uneven surface. The designer of this pattern had considerable skill in linear perspective drawing. Polychromic patterns of great complexity and variety are characteristic of Roman mosaic art of late antiquity and are found also in the Roman provinces in northern Africa. From the Villa Romana, Desenzano, Italy, dating from either the late 4th or early 5th century CE.
