Holmes, of Riverside, says that he has seen fifteen per cent of a seedling orange orchard become affected after heavy appli- cations of nitrogenous manures followed by irrigation close to the trees during hot weather. All the affected parts should be cut out so as to remove every trace of diseased tissue. In some cases this requires repeated cuttings and the use of an antiseptic wash. The " scaly bark" gum disease is the most prevalent form in South- ern California. It attacks the trunk of the tree, and also some of the.
