It wasthen bolted to the columns of the hydraulic press through thejournal box holes and a side load was applied at the center ofthe column guides, approaching as nearly as possible the loadsthat would occur in practice, due to the side thrust from thebolster. The frame began to take a permanent set in a side-wise direction at a load of 115,000 lbs. and with a load of 167,000lbs. the set became quite noticeable, approximating s/g in. Theload was gradually increased until it reached 232,500 lbs., B l8.!S0Com.\f Stress Diagram of Murphy Truck Side Frame. at which point the frame was badly bent and the permanentdeflection was found to be V/i in. The plate on the compres-sion member between the two column guides was displacedand all of the connections were strained. These frames are claimed to be stronger, lighter and muchcheaper than cast steel, being considered immune from crystalli-zation due to shocks and vibrations. They are designed toconform to all the M. C. B. requirements. Any design of brakehanger may be used with them. AUTOMATIC FEED FOR BOLT HEADER In many cases the output of a bolt header depends entirely onthe ability of the operator to withstand the fatigue of continuedrapid movement. Even with a helper it is not always possiblefor a man to develop the full capacity of the machine because ofhis physical limitations. This difficulty has been largely over-come by an automatic feed for bolt or rivet headers that hasbeen designed by the National Machinery Company, Tiffin, Ohio. 1 Wm^
