Culture of the Quince.—Thetrees or bushes are small andmay be grown at a distance ofonly ten feet or so from eachother. The roots are very shal-low and therefore the quincemay be grown in soil where thewater level is not very deepbelow the surface. The treesdo not prefer wet places, butthey will endure such placesbetter than other orchard fruits. The methods of planting aresimilar to those mentioned forthe apple. In pruning, however, special methods are used. Thequince is really a bush, as there are usually a number of main shootsor branches coming from or near the ground. This fact allows it to. Fig. 117.—Fancy apples are often packedin boxes holding almost one bushel. The3-4 pack here shown is used only for smallapples. The 2-3 is more common. Wrap-ping prevents bruising and makes the fruitkeep longer.
