When cut the leaves have excep- tional keeping qualities. On the plant during the rainy season the soft tissue of the basal leaves is sometimes consumed by bacteria, leaving the lacy vascular skeleton. This probably accounts for the name "lace ; Propagation is by seed but wild plants can usually be obtained in the Caribbean Islands where it occurs.
