DELTAS, FLOODPLAINS, WATERFALLS, ETC. 301 Unless the conditions are exceptional, the process ofdown-cutting at the outlet of the lake is relatively unim-portant. For streams which emerge from these quiet bodiesof water have very little working power, because all sedi-ment has been removed by the lake, and the stream hasthus been robbed of the tools with which it commonly doesits work. It is still able to act chemically; but this is one ofthe least important means which streams have for cutting.
