1896 Caption - The “Koto” Playing - The Koto is a musical instrument of high order in Japan, popular among people of enlightened classes. The body of this musical instrument is made of Kiri (Paulownia imperialis) measuring about 7 ft in length and a foot in width with thirteen strings. It is played by means of pieces of ivory attached to the tips of the first three fingers the right hand. The koto is often played in accompaniment to the samisen. Some of the instruments are very expensive costing over a hundred dollars.
