ANDREW The first Mayor of NewYork was appointed to thatoffice for the reason that hewas regarded as A veryhonest and able gentlemanwho would serve the peoplewell for Mayor and Coun-sellor, being also wellknown and popular amongall classes, and better ac-quainted with the lan-guage, manner and cus-toms of the Dutch thanany other Englishman. Thomas Willett, whoreceived the above felici-tous recommendation fromthe Governor of theColony,assumed the office on June12, 1665,—and according-ly became the first Mayorof New York, which, hith-erto, by its early settleis,citizens and burghers, hadborne the name of NewAmsterdam. And it willnot be amiss to say thatthere is nothing tending toshow that the recommen-dation of Gov. Nichollswas ever in any way abused,something that, probably,not all who have since oc-cupied that office have al-lowed their descendants toclaim.
