He was first landlord of thepopular Belknap Hotel, next a book-seller and druggist, then postmaster ofthe village, appointed by PresidentTyler. He continued as postmaster forabout six years, being reappointed byPresident Polk, but was removed underPresident Taylors Whig administration,as an offensive partisan. He wasagain reappointed by President Frank-lin Pierce, and continued in office by. The Late Hon. John Carroll Moulton President Buchanan, but during Presi-dent Lincolns term was succeeded bya Republican, after sixteen years of ser-vice in the post-office. In [861, Mr. Moulton became inter-ested in the Laconia Car manufactory,which had been conducted by CharlesRanlet & Co., until Mr. Ranlets deathin i860. Mr. Moulton gave his personalattention to the car building businessand rapidly developed a large and profit-able industry. The works were fre-quently enlarged, extensive buildingsput up, and thequality of workadvanced, untilpassenger carsof the fineststyle were man-ufactured hereand the Laco-nia Car Com-pany had a na-tional reputa-tion.
