JOHN WAYNE CHAMPLIN JOHN WAYNE CHAMPLIN was bornat Kingston, New York, February 17, 1S31, son ofJeffrey Clark and Ellis Champlin. The ancestor ofthe Champlins came from England and settled inRhode Island in 1638. His education was begunin the village school and was completed at tlie acad-emies of Stamford, Rhinebeck, and Harpersfiekl,New York. On leaving the last institution he tooka course of Civil Engineering at the Delaware Liter-ary Institute, New York, and afterwards followedthat line of work for three years. At the age oftwenty-three he came to Grand Rapids, Michigan,took up the study of the law, and was in due courseadmitted to the Bar. In 1856 he was chosen toprepare a revision of the charter of the city ofGrand Rapids. At various times he filled the officesof City Recorder and City Attorney, and in 1867he was elected Mayor.
