The rebuilding of Eritrea's railway between Masawa on the Red Sea Coast and Asmara the capital, following 30 years of abandonment and Civil War, was little short of a miracle. Much of t he track and rolling stock of Eritrean Railways was utilised by the military with coaches being used for sleeping quarters or improvised field hospitals.
