Barbary macaque of Gibraltar, the only wild monkey population in the European continent. About 300 animals occupy the area of the Upper Rock area of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve. They are known as Barbary apes or rock apes, despite being monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). Popular belief holds that as long as Gibraltar Barbary macaques exist on the Rock, the territory will remain under British rule. In 1942, during the Second World War, the population dwindled to just seven monkeys. And, because of the tradition, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill ordered their numbers be replenished from forest fragments in both Morocco and Algeria.
