. The street railway review . the Commission. The corp?also wired the car for a double-end controller arrangement, onecontroller of the Westinghouse L-4 type being loaned by the Trac-tion company, the other by the Westinghouse company, the latteralso supplying a pair of circuit breakers and a large number of re-sistance grids for controlling the running speed of the cars. The Commission has realized the necessity of making meas-urements of all of the quantities involved in these tests, especially inregard to the matter of speed. For this purpose two independentplans are employed. The test track, somewhat over 25,000 ft. iilength, is divided in sections of 1,000 ft. each. The sections aremarked by large signs plainly numbered. The instant of passingeach sign is indicated on the graphical record of a General Electricrecording ammeter, which is also used for the current record. Thisammeter records upon a strip of paper regular intervals of fiveseconds each. Upon this record is superimposed the time of passing. ■\NA, WITH P.\R.\EOL.\ VESTIBULE. each of the section signs, this being accomplished by closing a switchfor an instant as each of these signs are passed. Thus the timeof passing through a section of 1,000 ft. is accurately recorded Ihe second speed device consists of a small dynamo carried uponthe truck frame and geared to the car axle by sprocket wheels andchain. This dynamo is an Apple igniter of the Dayton ElectricalManufacturing Co. It has permanently magnetized field poles, butthese also carry exciting coils through which the field current ofthe recording ammeter is also passed. As this current must be main-tained accurately at a value of one ampere for current measuringpurposes, it is admirably adapted for the purpose mentioned. Thee. m. f. generated by the dynamo is read upon a Weston voltmeterspecially arranged for this purpose. The e. m. f. at 60 m. p. h. isabout 7 volts. The readings are directly proportional to the apparatus
