Radioactive iodine uptake of thyroid gland in two subspecies of Peromyscus maniculatus during four seasons of the year. (From Eleftheriou and Zarrow, 1962a.) exhibited by bairdi when compared with gracilis also corresponds to its greater sensitivity to exogenous and endogenous thyrotropin than either gracilis or the albino-Swiss mouse. The thyroid glands of both subspecies of deermice, however, are more sensitive to exogenous thyrotropin than are those of the albino-Swiss mouse. Adrenal Gland Isolation, characterization, and measurement of corticosteroids in the adrenals of the genus Peromyscus have been rather limited. In two subspecies, bairdi and gracilis, analyses of adrenal and plasma have revealed that corticosterone is the only glucocorticosteroid (Eleftheriou, 1964). In this respect these two subspecies of deer- mice are like the laboratory mouse and rat. There appears to be a significant difference in the level of circulating corticosterone in the two subspecies. Under normal controlled laboratory conditions, total corticosterone in bairdi is 25 /xg/100 ml of plasma while in gracilis it is /xg/lOO ml of plasma. The corticosterone found in bairdi is in its bound form whereas in gracilis /xg/lOO ml is free and 40 /xg/100 ml is plasma-bound. The high release of corti- costerone by gracilis may indicate that it is unduly stressed under.
