Protein electrophoresis gel. Electrophoresis gel showing proteins (blue) that have been isolated by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). SDS-PAGE is used to analyse the protein composition of cells and tissues. A sample has SDS (sodium dodecyl sulphate) added to it, which denatures it and applies an overall negative charge. It is then place into a gel that has an electrical current passed through it, which separates the sample's proteins based on their difference in size and charges.
