Federation Square located Flinders St & Swanston St /St Kilda Rd in Melbourne's CBD is a mixed-use development, hectares centred on 2 major public spaces: open squares (St. Paul's Court & The Square) & one covered (The Atrium), built atop a concrete deck above busy railway architectural competition received 177 entries worldwide. The brief "to better connect Flinders St to Yarra River to enhance & complement neighboring heritage buildings incl St Paul's Cathedral & Flinders St Station" The winner, consortium of Lab Architecture Studio dir by Donald Bates & Peter Davidson/ London,Karres en Brands Landscape Architects dir by Sylvia Karres & Bart Brands & local architects Bates Smart. Fed Square is made up of a series of interlocking & cascading spaces. Buildings open at all angles into the city, creating unexpected connections & vistas heavily influenced by the idea of ‘Federation’, of bringing disparate parts together to form a coherent distinctive façade, utilises new understandings of surface geometries allowing individual buildings within Federation Square to differentiate, whilst maintaining overall cladding materials: sandstone, zinc (perforated & solid) glass used within a triangular pinwheel grid. This modular system uses 5 single triangles repeated & joined to form yet larger triangles ending as triangular "mega panel" -then mounted onto frame to form the visible facade. Federation Square's cultural attractions hosts 2000+ events pr year & bustling event calendar supported by range of tourism experiences, incl guided tours, bicycle hire,Yarra River cruises, sightseeing day tours & free tourism services at the Melbourne Visitor Centre. And cultural festivals, exhibitions, event launches, performances, forums, films, concerts & fashion shows. Life at Fed Square is so rich there's something exciting going on whenever you visit.
