POLSTEAD CHURCH The church of Polstead is remarkable for its ruralsimplicity, combined with evident marks of anti-quity. It stands on the brow of an eminence in thepark belonging to Polstead Hall, the residence ofMrs. Mary Ann Cooke. The structure is surround-ed by an alcove of trees of varied height and foliage,and its spire, when seen at a distance, as it werepointing to heaven, forms a pleasing and picturesqueappearance. The building is by no means large,but is remarkable for the neat maimer m which it isfitted up The church contains a number of escut-cheons belonging to the Brand family, through whomthe Hall and extensive manor descended to the pre-sent occupiers. Near the altar-piece is a neat marble monument,bearing the effigies of a man and his infant son, m akneeling position, the former looking at a book andthe latter at a human skull he holds m his Maria Marten^ Grave
