Shuttle crew members' intact but charred travel bags lie next to a portion of the shuttle's storage compartment in rural East TX

Debris from the Space Shuttle Columbia rained down on east Texas after exploding and disintegrating in the skies over north central Texas Feb. 1, 2003, while returning from space. All seven astronauts on board were killed in the second major shuttle disaster for NASA. Shuttle crew members' intact but charred travel bags lie next to a portion of the shuttle's storage compartment in a rural wooded area in East Texas, found by volunteers searching for debris.
