1988: A statue of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko stands in front of the Hotel Ukraina. The Baroque "wedding cake" style building is one of the so-called "Seven Sisters" commissioned by Joseph Stalin as part of a plan to modernize Moscow immediately following World War II. Construction began in 1953 and the Hotel Ukraina opened in 1957.
