The Yokosuka Iris Garden or Shobuen is one of Japan’s largest iris gardens, where 140,000 irises of over 400 varieties bloom on a hectare site from late May to late June. There is also a Japanese iris festival is held here in June to celebrate the flowering of irises with koto - traditional stringed musical instrument - concerts are performed on Sundays during the period. On hand are Japanese gardeners, who continually prune the iris plants throughout the month, dressed in traditional style of kimono and peaked conical hats. In addition, Shobuen also features 250 Japanese wisteria of 11 varieties; their flowering season is from late April till early May.
