In 1898 Minnesota again experienced thesensations of an Indian uprising, but for-tunately on a scale which relieved the af-fair of the terrors of the pioneer days. Theattempt of a deputy United States marshalto arrest two Indians on the Leech Lakereservation led to the rising of the Pillagerband against the authority of the govern-ment. A detachment of troops sent fromFort Snelling attempted to enforce UnitedStates authority, and all but one or twoof the miscreants were finally arrested, butnot until an engagement had taken placeat Sugar Point where the command losteight killed and as many wounded.
